The niece wrapped up her observational drawing with a still life assignment. Instead of the usual fruit/etc objects, she chose a Minecraft figure, a cat figure, and a soda can... go figure! She did show she was paying attention (woot) for the stuff about shading. I think she could have used more practice, but what can ya do.
Spring break is over, so tonight we moved on to the next bullet point in the required curriculum: "Creative Expression." We went over some word association to get her thinking about how she might express emotions in shapes and colours and objects, and abstract expressionism which is a bit less rigorous, and something which all of my art teachers made me do which was LOOK IN THE MIRROR TO FIGURE OUT EXPRESSIONS. How else will one know what parts of faces do when their owners are feeling things?
(That sorta thing is also great for RP/writing... once you get past the oh god I'm so vain what is that ugly thing in the mirror bit and just look at the ways the lines go.)
In other news, it's snowing again, and I had to leave my car at the bottom of our street because the street was all jacked up and I'm a n00b that doesn't have chains or 4WD. What the actual hell is going on here? It's almost May.
(That's the back yard turned into a snowglobe by Google+.)
In other other news, I'm still looking through the Star Wars Encyclopedia for the "C" entry in my A to Z Twi'leks project. Any volunteers?

Jedi Temple Setting?
It's way past time for me to get back to work on things creative, isn't it?
What would you use for a Jedi Temple setting in a render?
I have a few ideas, but I can't recall seeing any other renders with that sort of setting.
10 October 2014 - Thumbnail Sketches and Planning
Back to doing the visual arts homeschooling for my niece after a brief break: we had to evacuate for a while due to a Freaking Forest Fire. Needless to say, that threw any interest in learning out the window for a while.
We finished up color theory (for now) and she proved she has a good grasp of it and what it's for. That's more than I could say for myself when I was her age!
Tonight we went over thumbnail sketches and why they're useful. I felt awful because it was mostly lecture and very little practice... boring stuff, and I'm sure it's hard to see why they're useful if you don't do them. Do any of you do thumbnail sketches before you s
5 July 2014 - Back to School
No, I'm not going back to school (I WISH!) and neither is the niece, not yet. But her homeschooling starts up again in about a month, so I'm spending my free time planning Art Stuff to comply with the State standards for Grade 7 Visual Arts. So far I have the Principles of Design and Color Theory taken care of (I am damn sure I didn't have to learn that stuff in 7th grade!) and some more stuff on the illusion of space and movement and... painting.
I have always hated the mess of painting (I ruined more clothes than I want to admit with phthalo green) and I think that's one reason why I'm happy to sit before the computer and make my messes on
16 May 2014 - Silly Cats
On the visual arts lessoning front, the niece seemed to have more fun when I stopped with the observational drawing practice and focused on cutesy chibi style cartoon stuff for her. Much relieved. I think she was particularly frustrated with the human proportions stuff (which in turn frustrated me, cos that was the stuff I loved practicing the most!)
Practicing silly cat drawings went a lot easier and everyone in the house said they enjoyed that more. MORE CATS. OK.
The next bullet point is to integrate technology, which I'm having her do by prepping a drawing to be scanned, cleaning it up and turning it into transparent lineart, and colori
